Canopus Networks Secures $2M Research Grant for Cloud Gaming Project

Growing Australia's Cloud Gaming Industry with AI-Assisted Network Boost

Sydney: Canopus Networks, in partnership with Pentanet and UNSW Sydney, has been awarded a $2 million research grant from the Australian Government's Cooperative Research Centre Project (CRC-P). The grant selection was made by the Honorable Ed Husic MP, Minister for Industry and Science, and will support the project titled "Growing Australia's Cloud Gaming Industry with AI-Assisted Network Boost."

Cloud gaming, a technology that renders graphics on powerful servers in the cloud and streams them to users, has the potential to revolutionize the gaming industry in Australia. However, the high bandwidth requirements can currently present a barrier to adoption on Australia’s internet infrastructure. To address this challenge, Canopus Networks, Pentanet, and UNSW will collaborate on the development of an innovative solution that utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) to dynamically uplift network performance for a seamless cloud gaming experience.

The project will involve the innovation of AI algorithms for accurate cloud gaming experience measurement, real-time adjustments to network parameters for on-demand bandwidth resourcing, the development of commercial interfaces combining user experience measurement with dynamic network provisioning, and the creation of frameworks for validation and accounting purposes.

"We are thrilled to have received this prestigious research grant and for Canopus, Pentanet, and UNSW to work on this groundbreaking project," said Vijay Sivaraman, CEO of Canopus Networks and Professor at UNSW. "With the support of the Australian Government, we aim to revolutionize the cloud gaming industry by introducing AI-assisted network provisioning capabilities that enhance user experience and drive industry growth."

Pentanet, an ASX-listed Australian telecommunications and gaming company and exclusive partner for NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW cloud gaming platform in Australia and New Zealand, will leverage its network infrastructure to provide the necessary measurement and enhancements for cloud gaming. "This project aligns perfectly with our vision of fueling the growth of the gaming industry through cutting-edge technology," said Stephen Cornish, managing director of Pentanet. "By collaborating with Canopus Networks and UNSW, we are confident that we can elevate the cloud gaming experience for our subscribers in Australia and gamers around the globe."

UNSW, renowned for its expertise in Artificial Intelligence research, will contribute deep knowledge in AI-based application behaviour modelling to the project. "We are excited to contribute to this collaborative effort that will propel the growth of the Australian digital games industry," said Prof. Ian Gibson, Deputy Dean of Industry Engagement, Innovation and Research at UNSW Engineering. "By harnessing the power of AI and our research capabilities, we aim to develop a robust solution that transforms cloud gaming and enhances network performance in a cost-effective manner."

With the research grant, Canopus Networks is positioned to become a global leader in real-time cloud gaming analytics, strengthening its position in the network analytics software market and driving export revenues. Pentanet aims to enhance its proprietary CloudGG platform and provide exceptional cloud gaming experiences, expanding its current market presence of 380,000 gamers in Australia and New Zealand.

This collaborative project between Canopus Networks, Pentanet, and UNSW represents a unique synergy, bringing together industry expertise, research capabilities, and investment. This groundbreaking project holds the potential to accelerate the growth of cloud gaming globally, fueling the expansion of the Australian digital games industry and positioning Australia as a leader in the cloud gaming revolution.
